Midnight Cry at 1st Baptist of Titusville

Elizabeth and I made the drive from Deltona to Titusville yesterday morning to hear Midnight Cry in concert and to join in the worship service at First Baptist Church in downtown Titusville. It was a wonderful experience. Outside, it was a glorious Florida day, overflowing with blue sky and sunshine. Inside, we were greeted by several members of the congregation, who appeared genuinely happy to see us (even though they had probably never heard of the Rambler). The setting was perfect for gospel music and Midnight Cry was in fine voice. The trio, composed of Greg Day, Stan Shuman, and Jim Rogers, warmed up the congregation with a blend of gospel standards and new songs. I have to say, Midnight Cry has as smooth a sound as I think I have heard. Their years of experience showed in the professional way their sound system blended with the natural acoustics of the sanctuary. We sat well towards the back and the blend of sound track and voices was superb.

Jim Rogers, the newest member of the group, sang the high tenor parts. Greg Day took the lead vocals, and Stan Shuman carried the baritone. Their harmonies were right on, and they worked together like they had been singing together all their lives. Stan Shuman handled most of the MC duties, as well as anchoring the harmony. Greg Day provided a witness in the story of how he and his brother had come to write the song for which the group is named, and their closing song during the worship service was “Midnight Cry”.

But the music was only part of the story. Pastor Charles Miller preached a fine sermon, and the worship service was a blessing to us. As we left the church, the congregation and the singers were sitting down to a feast in the fellowship hall. I truly regretted that we had commitments that forced us back onto the road, because the serving tables were piled deep and wide with enough food to feed a medium sized army – and it all looked and smelled delicious.
